The postgraduate Sanskrit department, located at saurashtra university, Rajkot, Gujarat, has been established for the in-depth study and research of Sanskrit language, the heart of Indian culture. The main objective of the department is to promote academic excellence, in-depth study of various branches of Sanskrit literature and research work based on the vast Sanskrit literature.
Sanskrit is a treasure trove of invaluable knowledge of ancient Indian heritage. Keeping this subject in mind, the postgraduate Sanskrit department was established in Saurashtra University in the year 1990. Since then, the following learned professors have made important contributions to the development of the department as excellent professors and head in the department. Such as Prof. (Dr.) M.V. Joshi, Prof. (Dr.) H. N. Hindocha, Prof. (Dr.) M. K. Moliya, and Prof. (Dr.) R. A. Chotalia. Presently, Prof. (Dr.) R. N. Kathad is serving as Professor and Head in the postgraduate Sanskrit department.
In the year 2000, the Department got a small but nice building of its own with a donation of Rs. 5, 25000/- from Shri Gopalkrishna trust, Junagadh. In the 12th plan, UGC approved Rs. 50 lakhs for the reconstruction of a modern building of the Sanskrit department. So, on 1st march 2014, the new building of the Sanskrit department was inaugurated. Since then, academic work is being done in this building equipped with complete physical facilities. At present, this department is adorned with a beautiful grove of trees.
The postgraduate Sanskrit department is committed to keeping alive the glorious tradition of Indian knowledge and to evaluate the Indian knowledge system in modern times. Sanskrit is not only an ancient language but also a pillar of knowledge, Indian culture and philosophical thought. The Sanskrit department emphasizes on in-depth study and research of classical subjects like drama, Poetics, Philosophy, Puraná, grammar etc.
The main objective of Sanskrit department is to guide the students towards life-oriented human values along with ideological ability, language skills and research ability through the rich heritage of philosophy, literature and Indian knowledge. The experienced teachers here provide proper guidance for high-level education and research and ensure that the students are given regular study work.
The postgraduate Sanskrit department on the saurashtra university campus is a symbol of the tradition of excellent education. About 98 students from the postgraduate Sanskrit department have passed the UGC-NET/GSET examination. They are working as professors. Many students are doing research as UGC-NET - JRF and UGC post doctoral research fellows. this is a great achievement. The postgraduate Sanskrit department provides the students with classrooms equipped with modern equipment for study, library, E-library as well as reference books required for research so that the students get a conductive environment for academic activities. Along with academic activities, seminars, workshops and research projects are organized in the postgraduate Sanskrit department. Also, "Sanskrit Sambhashan varg" is run for the development and promotion of Sanskrit language.
